Songs for the Brokenhearted is Ayelet Tsabari’s much awaited debut novel. She is the author of the memoir The Art of Leaving, winner of the Canadian Jewish Literary Award, and the short stories collection The Best Place on Earth, winner of the Sami Rohr Prize for Jewish Literature.
Songs for the Brokenhearted follows a young Yemeni Israeli woman living in New York who learns of her mother’s secret romance in a dramatic journey through lost family stories.
Told in dual timelines, the novel looks at a family’s grief, discovery, and how they all found their voice. It is a story about voice and voicelessness, traditions lost and found, and the unbreakable bonds between mothers and daughters. It was called “one of the most big-hearted, profound, and nuanced novels in years.”
