FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What age group can attend the new program?
This program is for children 30 months to school age. There is a limited amount of space for children under the age of 36 months.

What type of curriculum will you offer?
Like our current programming the new space will offer a play-based, emergent curriculum. Each day is a balance of activities: free choice in specially designed learning centres, teacher directed activities such as music, drama, art and science, as well as outdoor and gym time. We focus on Jewish holidays from a cultural perspective and invite families to share their stories with us. We are deeply rooted in the BC Early Learning Framework as well the JCC Association Sheva Learning Framework.

What is the difference between the new program, current full-day programs, other preschools and Junior Kindergartens?
The main difference is the time. Yeladim and Gan Yeladim are open from 7:45am – 5:30pm. The new program will be open 7:15am – 3:15pm September through June, like many preschools and Junior Kindergartens. However, we will also be open 7:15am – 5:00pm July and August. Our licensed educators provide quality care and education for all the children in our programs; each having the same credentials as preschool or Junior Kindergarten teachers.

Will the program run through the summer?
There will be a 10-month as well as a 12-month option available during registration.

Is there a half-day or part-time option?
At this time we are only offering full-day, 5-day per week spaces. However, morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up can be based on family needs, as our current full-day programs are.

How do I get on the waitlist for these spaces?
We will be starting with our current waitlist; it currently serves our Yeladim and Gan Yeladim programs.

My child is already on the waitlist. Can I find out what number I am?
Yes, just call the ECE Director for information.

If I decline a space in the new program, can I stay on the waitlist?
Yes, if you prefer to wait for a space in Yeladim or Gan Yeladim, you can stay on the waitlist without penalty.

If I accept a space in the new program, can I stay on the waitlist?
Yes, you can accept a space in the new program until a space in Yeladim or Gan Yeladim becomes available.

What if I need care past 3:15pm?
Due to space constraints during the school year, we can not provide care past 3:15pm. However, the JCC offers a variety of recreational programs such as dance, swimming, sports, arts and more! Many of these programs start at 3:00pm or 3:15pm and offer pick-up from child care. In this case you would need to arrive in time for pick-up from their recreational program.

Do you have to be Jewish to attend?
The Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver welcomes families from all faiths. There is a strong emphasis on Jewish values and traditions. Holidays are celebrated through stories, songs, art, games and of course cooking. Hebrew is integrated into our daily schedule.
