History
Norman Rothstein—after whom the NRT is named—was born in 1918 into a pioneer family in the Vancouver Jewish community. Norman was a successful businessman and, with his wife and beloved life partner Annette, had a passion for Israel and the cultural arts. He held many positions in local Jewish and cultural arts organizations including Vice-President of the United Jewish Appeal and Board Member and strong supporter of the Vancouver Playhouse Theatre and the Vancouver Art Gallery. His leadership in both the Jewish and the cultural arts communities led to Annette Rothstein’s endowment of the Norman Rothstein Theatre in the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver as a fitting way to honour his memory. During its early years, Annette Rothstein was the theatre’s Honourary Patron. Upon her death, her name was added to the theatre to honour her dedicated support of this important community resource.
